Start with how the building will be used
A heated workshop, a two-car garage with an EV charger, and a barn with welders or air compressors are different services. List lights, receptacles, heaters, and 240-volt tools before you size the feeder. Guessing after the conduit is buried is the expensive path.
Feeder, subpanel, and the run from the house
Most detached buildings take a subpanel fed from the main service. Distance, burial or overhead path, and whether the house panel has capacity all matter. Outlets, lighting, and future EV or generator ties

Do I need a subpanel in the garage?
Often yes once you have more than a couple of circuits. A subpanel keeps the feeder clean and leaves room to grow. Small sheds sometimes stay on a few home-run circuits instead.
Can the garage feeder support an EV charger?
Sometimes. The feeder and the house service both have to carry it. We size that in the load calculation before you buy the charger.
Overhead or underground to a barn?
Site, clearances, and preference decide. Underground is common on lake lots when the path is clear. Ledge and distance show up in the estimate.
Should the outbuilding be heated on its own circuit?
Dedicated heat circuits are safer and quieter for the rest of the building. Share them and breakers trip when tools and heat overlap.
