Does my electrical panel support an EV charger?
A load calculation answers that, not empty breaker spaces. Many Lakes Region homes take Level 2 as-is, and others need load shed or a panel upgrade.
Empty spaces are not the same as capacity
A panel can look open and still be at its limit once heat, well pumps, dryers, and the new charger run together. We calculate the load before we quote a Level 2 circuit. That is how we avoid promising a charger the service cannot carry.
Load shed vs a panel or service upgrade
A load shed module can pause or limit the charger when the house is already drawing hard, which keeps a workable service from needing an upgrade. When the panel is full, obsolete, or the service itself is undersized for what you want, a panel or service upgrade is the right next step. Both options show up in writing before you commit.
What we check on a Lakes Region walk
Panel brand and condition, main breaker size, existing large loads, where the charger will mount, and how far the run is. Can a 100-amp service run a Level 2 charger?
Sometimes, with the right load calculation and often with load shed. A 100-amp camp or cottage service is a common limit case. We will not guess from the main breaker size alone.
Do I need a 200-amp service for an EV charger?
Not always. Many homes charge fine without a service upgrade. When other large loads and the charger push past what the service can carry, 200-amp becomes part of the conversation.
What is a load shed module?
It is equipment that manages the charger against other loads so the service is not asked to run everything at once. It is one way to add Level 2 charging without upgrading the panel or service.
Will you tell me before you start if an upgrade is required?
Yes. Needed panel or service work comes from the load calculation and sits in the written estimate. We do not discover it mid-install and surprise you.
Does a full panel mean I cannot get a charger?
A full panel means we plan space as part of the job, which can include a panel upgrade or a different arrangement. It does not automatically end the project.
