What an interlock kit does

An interlock is hardware on the panel cover that physically blocks the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on together. With a portable inlet and the right breaker, you can backfeed selected loads through the panel after you start the generator and throw the breakers in the right order. It is common on portable hookups because it is compact and costs less than a full transfer cabinet. It still needs a correct inlet, feeder, and labeling.

What a transfer switch does

A transfer switch is separate equipment that moves circuits or the whole service between utility and generator. Manual switches are common with portable setups when you want dedicated circuit control. Automatic transfer switches pair with standby generators so the house leaves the grid without you at the panel. Size and type follow the backup scope and the generator.
